Our History

Dr. Emile Gurstelle founded the practice in 1981 in Wayne, New Jersey. Hence the name, Wayne Psychological Group. We moved to Riverdale, New Jersey in 1991 and relocated to Butler in 2008. All providers are licensed by the New Jersey Board of Psychological Examiners.

Our director, Dr. Gurstelle is also licensed in New York, has earned a Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology from the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards, and is recognized by the Council for the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. For many years, he provided volunteer services to first responders involved in critical incidents.

A wide array of therapy

There are many types of psychotherapy. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is very effective for anxiety disorders, depression, anger, insomnia and chronic pain. In Cognitive Therapy, we learn to change the way we think because the emotional part of the brain listens to our thoughts. We learn to reconceptualize problems to make them manageable. In Behavior Therapy, we change how our body responds to stress through relaxation methods including meditation, breathing and biofeedback.

Through Insight and Person-Centered therapy, people have an opportunity to vent what is bothering them to a trained professional who maintains objectivity while actively listening. We offer new insights allowing people to form new perspectives and come up with new ways of coping.
